Mission Impickyable IV: Going Nowhere

By: Picky

From the moment that I discovered earthbound.net in the summer of 1999 I had the idea in my head that it would be a blast to create my own site which was large enough to rival the old eb.net that we all loved. It is only now that I realize that such dreams are rediculous, there is absolutely no way for the small EarthBound sites of the community to survive. Its not that worthy competition has never existed. Back in the the glory days of ebvortex.net/moonside.net under Jeb2 there was a site clearly capable of taking up the mantle of the EarthBound community if starmen.net ever fell, but as long as starmen.net existed this fantastic site had no hope of experiencing similar success.

There have always been a few people who take great interest in the smaller sites in the EarthBound community. These same people have slowly faded from the starmen.net scene over the years and no longer have any influence over the thoughts of the rest of the community. The rest of the community is unwilling to concede that starmen.net may not in fact be the end all be all of EarthBound sites, that it is possible for other sites to emulate and build upon the starmen.net formula. Of course one of the many obstacles for the smaller sites in the EBC is that they are stuck on that starmen.net formula. People are afraid to branch out from the content driven site with a forum and chat room forumla that starmen.net established. Instead they prefer to stay on the safe path, but the path that will always leave them in starmen.net's shadow.

This complete utter dominance that starmen.net has also crushes the spirit of other hopeful competitors. Those that want to make sites devoted to starmen.net look at sm.net with its monopoly over the EBC and they despair. They figure that it is impossible to ever compete against such a behemoth. The days of ms.net under Jeb2 ended because Jeb2 came to the conclusion that making an EarthBound site was a waste of his time. He would never be able to have any sort of success because with starmen.net around it was impossible for a smaller site to attain any kind of success. Before moonside.net was finally crushed the once thriving community that it had faded away. The people who had been faithful to ms.net were going to starmen.net because it had a larger community that as a result had more activity. SM.net was leeching the life out of MS.net long before Jeb2 gave up on it.

Despite this there are still many people who are eager to contribute to the community by working on a site. Now the only viable option is SM.net. The monopoly over the EBC is complete, not only does SM.net get all of the community activity but it also gets its choice of staffers. What is strange about this is that recently SM.net has started to hire inexperienced and unreliable people. People who have never proven themselves. In truth there are more than enough people floating around the community to create a staff that could rival SM.net's. The only problem is that SM.net will always have the two best leaders in the community and Xodnizel. With Jeb2 finally giving up on the EBC there is now no longer anyone capable of bringing together a group of people to work on a site to rival SM.net. The EBC community misses you Jeb2.
